Summary: There are two main methods to test customizations. One is more time-consuming and the other is more costly.
The first method is to purchase another gold board for testing purposes. Make it identical in as many ways as you can to your "live" board and put some test threads and things in it. This can also prove a very good resource for training new moderators and admins in.
The second method, which can also be used in combination with the first, is to create copies of your board pages on your local hard drive, which you can then change in order to test the effect of a script on your board without affecting your user's experience.
Using the first method is pretty self-explanatory, so let's skip over that for the moment and talk about some tips on using the second method.
